Small Talk began eight years ago as a group of women photographers seeking community, accountability, and connection. We’ve created, curated, and hosted many projects in the intervening years, often built on the foundation of interweaving different voices together, inspiring and supporting each other and the Portland photo community.

For our most recent collaboration, we chose an overarching prompt, “the old future’s gone,” as a focal point for new work. They are words that inspired visceral creative ideas in each of us based largely on how different our lives look now than what we expected pre-pandemic. We each interpreted the prompt in different ways and eventually wove our images together into this works in progress show. 

We’re excited to share this vignette of our process with you and very curious to see where this prompt leads us next—individually and collectively.
