We are very excited to announce a new annual program at Strange Paradise Gallery called Reverberations. For nearly 6 years, Small Talk has had the opportunity and privilege to work together - creating an insular community that has become incredibly important to us and our artistic practices. We have always wanted to find a way to share that experience with the larger photographic community and now that we have an incredible project and gallery space within Oregon Contemporary, we can.

Through this program, we will use our platform to host female-identifying, nonbinary, BIPOC and LGBTQIA+ artists whose work we love and respond to. The ultimate goal of Reverberations is to create relationships between different artist’s work that start new and exciting conversations - like we do with our own projects. We also hope that this will expose the selected artists to other groups and audiences who may not have discovered the work otherwise.

The first edition of this program has been supported by a generous grant from the Regional Arts and Culture Council - thank you RACC!

Vol. 1

Kelda Van Patten // May 3rd - June 5th, 2021 // Reception: May 15thThrough the constructed photographs in Always in Flower and in Fruit, Kelda Van Patten seeks to invoke a sense of surprise or contradiction through the consideration of photographs that occupy liminal spaces between artifice and truth, imagination and the real, and mimesis and the origin. The objects are mined from the natural world, nature kitsch, and feminine stereotypes. When seen in person, these large, intricately constructed scenes are vibrant and alive, evoking a visceral experience that speaks to the coming summer as well as the sense of hope many of us feel as we begin to see a light at the end of the pandemic tunnel.

Marilyn Montufar // June 7th - July 10th, 2021 // Reception: June 12th

Marilyn Montufar’s portraits evoke a quiet contemplation and empathy with her subjects. She uses photography as a primary medium to advocate for and inspire social change, amplifying stories from underrepresented voices through the arts, including youth, migrants, women, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ communities. Her goal is to share people’s stories and connect diverse communities, creating a pathway for conversation, compassion, and understanding.
